In July and August the majority of trout and dollies in Southeast AK are found in the streams feeding on salmon eggs behind spawning chums and pinks. 8'6"-10' single hand rods in 4-6 wts with a weight forward floating line are best as are10'-11'6' switch rods in 3-5 wts matched with a one piece switch line like Rio's Switch or Switch Chucker work well. The main fishing technique is dead drifting/nymphing egg patterns and beads, which make shooting head setups hard to fish on switch rods. Beads and egg patterns in the 8-10mm size work best in a variety of colors ranging from bright oranges to peachy colors. Check out our weekly fish report for what is fishing best.
