Question:
what is the best all around tippet and leader x size for trout.
Answer:
Tuckyb25,
Thank you for the inquiry. This is a good question and the answer to this question really depends on where, what and when. If I am throwing standard dries and nymphs, say size 10 down to size 14, 4x is my go to. #16 and smaller than that, then I’ll bump down to 5 or 6x(#20 Griffiths Gnats.) If I am chucking streamers (wooly buggers, smolt imitations, leeches, etc…) 2x is my starting point. If I am swinging leeches for mondo trout on rivers like Kenai or Naknek, 0x is where I start. For mousing, 0-2x depending on the size of the mouse. The larger patterns need a heavier tippet to prevent them for spiralling out of control and creating Bimini Twists where you don’t want them, lol.
I hope that this is helpful. If you have further questions on tippet sizes or strengths, please shoot me an email to mike@alaskaflyfishinggoods.com.
Tight Lines,
