Question:
I am new to spey/switch and trying to navigate through heavy heads for big flies. In general, what weight skagit head or range should one use for a fly like one of your large dolly llamas, or a STS leach? All I can find is that scandi is for traditional salmon flies or skating dries, and heavier skagit is for bigger heavier flies. I'm trying to figure out how heavy for how big. Any guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated. I currently have a 11'6" 8wt switch rod rated for 400-600 grains; how big of flies can it throw?
Answer:
There is a lot to cover in your question and it would be best to chat with you over the phone. We will need to narrow down the grain window for your rod to start. Generally speaking, Dolly Llamas are too big to spey cast effectively. STS Leeches however are great as long as you have the correct Skagit head and a heavy enough tip.
