Question:

Are there any good lakes around Juneau where I can fish from a canoe or from the shore? I am new to the area and love to take my son out.

Answer:

There are some good, easily accessible lakes you can take your son to (once the snow and ice melt!)

The first is Twin Lakes. It is right next to Egan Drive by Salmon Creek. ADFG stocks it with little rainbows and some of them hold over the winter. It is a good one to canoe since the edges get very weedy.

Another is the Dredge Lakes back near the glacier. Some of them are stocked as well and some have resident or sea run Dollies and cutthroat trout.

Finally, Auke Lake fishes quite well right after ice out and into May. Try the area closest to back loop road and Lake Creek which is the feeder/inlet creek for Auke Lake. It drops off in action pretty quickly after June.

Most of the other lakes around Juneau are a hike to get to. They typically have Dollies and cutthroat. Windfall, Peterson, Cropley are all nice hike in lakes.
