Question:
Hi! Your website is very comprehensive, thanks for a great resource!
I am planning a week long sea kayaking trip to Glacier Bay for late August and while it's not a fishing focused trip I want to see what I can catch. I don't know if you have any advice for that area regarding flies and target species? Trout, salmon, saltwater, freshwater, I'm interested in whatever I can find! I'll keep doing my research, but right now I'm especially interested in figuring out what flies I should be tying up.
Thanks for your help! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Bo
Answer:
Hi Bo,
Sounds like a great kayak trip you have planned. Late August in SE Alaska is the tail end of the pink salmon run and the beginning of the silver salmon run. There is some fishing in the Gustavus area where I am guessing your trip will begin. However, once you get up in the bay, most of the water coming in is glacial and does not host salmon runs. So I would not expect that you will find much in the way of fishing.
If you do, I’d have some #2 Clouser Minnows in Chartreuse/White, Pink/White and All Pink along with you. Those would catch both pinks and silvers.
Best of luck,
Brad
