Question:

Hey guys, I have a job opportunity in Juneau, Alaska for the summer and am strongly considering it. However I need to know if the fishing around the immediate Juneau area is good enough for me to fully commit. I’m a lifelong fly fisherman and am very new to salmon fishing outside of the Great Lakes. I’ve been reading your past blog posts and am wondering if a lot of these places are easy to get to on public transportation or on a bike, and if there are places in Juneau where it’s possible to get away from the crowds. My number is 616-648-9943 if a call is easier to answer my questions. Thank you!

Answer:

Hi There!

There is a lot of good fishing close to Juneau. You can access a fair amount by bike, some by public bus but it’s not ideal……. Depending on where you live (downtown vs Mendenhall Valley) you can get to some good Dolly Varden fishing pretty easily. Montana Creek in the Mendenhall Valley is very good from mid July to the end of September. Sheep Creek is 5 miles south of downtown Juneau and has Dolly Varden almost all summer. Both creeks get chum and pink salmon as well.

Hope that helps!
