6/19/25 Fishing Report

The king fishing is currently as good or better than we have seen in a decade.  This fishery is a great way to get out and put some seriously high-quality protein on the table and what's more, you can do it while having a fun time flyfishing!  Don't let this unique fishery pass you by this season.  There are still a couple of weeks left and there is plenty of time to get your fish!  The Bayview/Fish Creek area has been fishing well the last few days.  Most of the success is coming on either pink or chartreuse flies, with Mr. Bodangles once again being the most popular pattern.  Beware though, if the wind is down the no-see-ums are epic.  Don't even bother going out here unless you have bug spray, a head net, and sun gloves.  The Sheep Creek and Thane areas have been slower lately, but as these tides start moving more and more South of the bridge will likely start fishing better than North.  No reports from Lena this last week.

The Dolly fishing has remained excellent in the Gastineau.  Most of the anglers are focusing on this area since there are also kings to be had, but the few reports we got from out the road indicated that there is good fishing North of town as well.  As the chums start to trickle in the Dollies will begin to think about heading back into the freshwater.  Cowee Creek out the road usually starts fishing the best.  Stick with baitfish streamer patterns, especially pink AK Clousers.

Windfall Creek definitely has sockeye in it, but water levels are extremely low.  There are fish to be had for anglers willing to be very patient and sneaky.  Lengthen leaders and use small, unweighted flies if the fish are ultra weary.

There are finally 3 people who have provided their two photos for entry into the drawing.  We can't stress enough the importance of taking eligible photos.  Fly in mouth, landscape visible.  The rules to the competition are listed below.  The fishing should stay outstanding for the remainder of the month, so there's plenty of time to get out there!

KING CONTEST RULES:

Catch one king salmon North of the Douglas bridge and one king salmon South of the Douglas bridge.  These fish must be caught with a CAST fly.  You can cast off a boat, but no trolling.  Each fish caught must be photographed with the fly CLEARLY VISIBLE in the mouth in such a way that your location is verifiable.  Anywhere withing the terminal harvest area is fair game for this contest.  Once you have caught your two fish (on fly, in the terminal harvest area) and shared or brought in your two photos, you will be entered into the drawing.  First prize will receive an 8wt Echo EPR saltwater fly rod, perfect for the upcoming coho season.  Second place will receive a custom painted box of beads for Dolly season and third prize will be a Grundens AFFG Sun Hoody in the winner's choice of size and color.  The drawing will be on July 1st, and the contest will run the entire month of June.

As always, we love featuring your photos for our fishing reports.  If you have a great fish, scenery, or action photo that has to do with fishing around town send it our way!  You can email photos or videos to cory@alaskaflyfishinggoods.com.  Please remember to handle fish with care, especially if you are practicing catch and release.  Consider getting a net with a rubber basket to help land fish quickly, pinch your barbs and keep them in the water until you are ready to snap a quick photo.

See you on the water!
