Winter steelhead.
Answer:
HI,
Thank you for checking in with us. I can honestly say that I do not have any experience with the G2 Platinums. If they are anything like their predecessor, they will be pretty sweet. Most of my experience is with Sage, Echo and Redington. Sage’s 13′ Sonic is pretty sweet. It’s fairly fast and like to punch. Redington’s Claymore are ok. They get the job done. And I have’nt throw the Full Spey from Echo, only the Compact. It was nice. Crisp, but a little touchy.
As far as size goes, a 7 wt is a pretty good size for small to mid size flies. Once you start getting into larger, weighted pattners, they can struggle… really depend on the rod and line setup. As far as fish go, I’ve caught some pretty nice fish on my 7 wt. I have also gotten my bum handed to me. If you fishing place like Oregon, most of Washington and BC, you should be good. If you are fishing the OP in Washington or some of the bigger fish rivers in BC, you may want to bump up a bit. In BC, I lost the largest fish I ever hooked because I couldn’t stop him from going through a rapid. That was with a pretty stout 7 wt Sage.
If you would like to know more about any of the rods that I mentioned, please let me know. Shoot me an email to mike@alaskaflyfishinggoods.com
