Question:

Are lead jighead streamers good for sockeye in Alaska? Pink over white marabou OK?

Answer:

Hi Walt,

Thank you for your inquiry. Sockeye typically don’t hit much once they have entered freshwater. There is always the exception. But unlike the other species of salmon including steelhead that eat prey such as baitfish, squid and shrimp, sockeye filter feed on small crustaceans. This is most likely why they aren’t aggressive when they first enter rivers and streams. When they get closer to spawning and have already turned red, they do get pretty agro/territorial.  With that, I would say the answer you are looking for is probably not.

If you have any questions or would like to know a little more on fishing sockeye, shoot me an email to mike@alaskaflyfishinggoods.com. Let me know when and where you are going, and I will give you some insight on how to fish them.

Best regards,

Mike Cole
