Question:
I’m looking to come up to Juneau, and as an intermediate fly flisherman, I’d like to get a sense of where to stay there in Juneau, where I can easily get my line wet and fly/gear recommendations.
Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for your email inquiring into fishing in Juneau. A lot of anlgers that come to Juneau stay at places like the Driftwood Inn, Prospector Hotel by Ramada, or the Best Western Country Inn. There are many other hotels, b&b’s and Air BnBs. One of the popular b&b’s is called Pierson’s Pond.
As far as where, how and what to use while on your stay in Juneau, that will vary depending on your timing. There is good fishing to to be had starting around mid May – mid September. If you are looking for salmon, I would say to shoot for mid July – mid September being the best times. If you are looking for trout, mid May- mid September with peak season being July 14-Sept 1.
9′ 7/8 wt rods with a floating line work well for salmon and 9′ 4-6 wts with a floating line are good for trout. Flies will depend on season, but we fish a lot of small to large streamers for trout and medium to xl attractor streamers for salmon. You can look through our archived fishing reports to get an idea of what is going on when. The reoports will give you a sense of run timing and what patterns we are throwing. If you click on our “how to’s” drop down and throw Juneau n the search bar, you will see a bunch of answered questions in there that could be helpful. You can also send a message to Mike, our website manager. He is a great resource: mike@alskaflyfishinggoods.com.
