Question:
Hello,
I’m going to be in the area between May 7 to the 17th. I’m wondering what spring fishing is like on the Lisainski, Stag, Fleming, Elfendahi, Zhilo, and Morris Rivers? Will they be running too high to fly fish?
Thanks
Birk (from New Mexico)
Answer:
Hi Birk,
May 7-17 is prime steelhead and searun Dolly Varden fishing time. SE Alaska rivers don’t experience the same run off conditions that rivers in Montana/Colorado/etc have in the spring. We can of course get high water at any time if it is rainy enough, but in general our rivers are fishable in the spring.
I haven’t fished the rivers you listed, but typically you will find sea run Dolly Varden and cutthroat trout near the river mouths feeding on salmon fry. If the river has a run of steelhead, they will be further upstream.
Good luck and let us know if you need help with fly selection.
