Hmm, good question. The 8wt is plenty of rod for the local kings. I use an 8wt and it works great. The only thing to consider is the weight of the flies of choice. Some of the king patterns are pretty heavy and if you are spey casting, the 9wt would toss easier. If you are mostly double overhanding, then the 8 is better.
