Question:

Hello there,
My wife and I are going to soaring eagle lodge for a week beginning Sept 4th. We will have a couple of days to our selves to go sight see and do what we want. I would like to find a place to hook up on a salmon with my fly rod. Could you recommend a section of a choice river and maybe a couple of flies to purchase before we go? Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Jason

Answer:

Hi Jason,

Thank you for the inquiry. There should be some silvers in both the Anchor and at Deep Creek. Both Deep Creek and the Anchor have easy access to the lower river where you can try for silvers on an incoming tide. Deep Creek has a large parking lot set right off of the Sterling Highway. You will want to fish down from the highway and try to get fish as they are going in with the tide. The Anchor has ample access through Roadside Park. To get here, watch for the turn off at mile 157. Here again the fishing is often best just after a high tide. There is some upriver access too off of North Fork Road. Download an app called On X for really good aerial maps which can highlight the public access points.

For flies check out the following:
Polar Egg Hareball Leech – fuchsia, black/chartreuse, purple
Dolly Llama #2 – black/white, pink/uurple, black/purple
Kilowatt – black/blue, purple
Lead Eye Egg Sucking Leech #2 or #4 – purple, black, pink
Deep Six – cerise/white, black/white, pink/purple, black/pink

Best of luck on your trip. If you would like more information, shoot an email over to mike@alaskaflyfishinggoods.com
