5/29/2025 Fishing Report
The hot story this week is king salmon. So far fish have been caught in all of the terminal areas around town. This is shaping up to be one of the best king salmon returns we have seen in a number of years, so get your gear together, come stock up on the top king patterns and get out there. So far it is still early and there aren't tides that have been absolutely better than others, so if you have time head out to your favorite spot and give it a shot. The rules to our first ever king salmon contest are below.
KING CONTEST RULES:
Catch one king salmon North of the Douglas bridge and one king salmon South of the Douglas bridge. These fish must be caught with a CAST fly. You can cast off a boat, but no trolling. Each fish caught must be photographed with the fly CLEARLY VISIBLE in the mouth in such a way that your location is verifiable. Anywhere withing the terminal harvest area is fair game for this contest. Once you have caught your two fish (on fly, in the terminal harvest area) and shared or brought in your two photos, you will be entered into the drawing. First prize will receive an 8wt Echo EPR saltwater fly rod, perfect for the upcoming coho season. Second place will receive a custom painted box of beads for Dolly season and third prize will be a Grundens AFFG Sun Hoody in the winner's choice of size and color. The drawing will be on July 1st, and the contest will run the entire month of June.
While kings are most anglers' favorite species to target this time of year, don't forget about all the other opportunities that the month of June provides. The Windfall Creek sockeye fishery is going, and this coming Saturday is the second day that the fishery is open. Remember, Windfall Creek is only open to fishing Wednesdays and Saturdays the month of June and is closed to fishing the entire month of July. If this is somewhere you enjoy fishing, then make sure you take advantage these next three weeks.
Now that there are salmon around people tend to forget about the Dolly fishing, but it continues to be very good. Under the bridge, Sheep Creek, Boy Scout Beach and Echo Cove are all fishing great. Bracket the lows close to town and bracket the highs out the road. When the fish are active on the surface try throwing some top water patterns for an added challenge.
As always, we love featuring your photos for our fishing reports. If you have a great fish, scenery, or action photo that has to do with fishing around town send it our way! You can email photos or videos to cory@alaskaflyfishinggoods.com. Please remember to handle fish with care, especially if you are practicing catch and release. Consider getting a net with a rubber basket to help land fish quickly, pinch your barbs and keep them in the water until you are ready to snap a quick photo.
See you on the water!
