Question:

What are the best flies for sockeye and the best place to fish for them

Answer:

Thanks for inquiring about sockeye flies and the places to fish them. In terms of fishing spots the list could be quite long! In general, sockeye return to rivers that have lakes connected to them. Southcentral Alaska (Kenai River), Bristol Bay with its many rivers and large lakes, and Kodiak Island all are excellent sockeye destinations. In contrast, Southeast Alaska with its steep terrain and short lake-free rivers is not as prime sockeye country.

For flies, small and sparse is the name of the game. Sockeye Lanterns, Sockeye Lightning, Mercer’s Sockeye Fly, Mini Krystal Shrimp, are all good small patterns. The top three colors are Green, Red and Chartreuse. You can also go with our Sockeye Fly Selection that has a good all around assortment of flies.

Hope that helps. Feel free to call the shop if you need more assistance.

Best of luck, Brad
