In our Economy Package we recommend an 5 weight 4-piece Sage Vantage rod. The Vantage is a very solid and smooth rod. It is easy to cast and throws heavy flies and sink tips well. You also have the option of getting the 6 weight rod for bigger rivers, beach fishing, and throwing heavier rigs.
The reel is a sturdy Sage 1800 Series reel. It is a cast aluminum, large arbor reel with a sealed drag system. Other options include the Lamson Konic 2 which is a cast aluminum reel with Lamson sturdy conical drag system or the Lamson Guru which is a fully machined, anodized, and saltwater-safe reel.
The standard line is a Scienfific Anglers Headstart WF floating line. You also can upgrade to a Rio Grand floating line or a Scienfific Anglers Wet Tip sinking tip line in a variety of sink rates. The Wet Tip III is a medium sink tip and the Wet Tip IV is a medium-fast sink tip.
The Sage Vantage rod comes with a cordura covered PVC rod & reel tube that allows you to carry your rod with the reel attached.
