There is no finer tackle for pursuing trout in Alaska or anywhere else for that matter. An amazing 5 or 6 weight Winston B3x or Sage One travel rod that will allow you to easily cast all day. Matched with an Abel Super Series reel that is simply the most dependable reel on the planet. Other awesome reel options are Nautilus NV, Lamson Litespeed 2 or galvan torque series.
The 590-4 Winston B3x is our rod choice for this package. The B3x is smooth and powerful and it is amazing how little effort is needed to cast it. It is a medium-fast action rod with a very delicate tip. If you want a little more power or plan to throw sink tip lines you should go up to the 6 weight B3x. The other rod option is the Sage One Series rods. The One is a terrific trout rod that casts like a laser but is still very light and delicate. Go with the 5 weight for all-around trout fishing, the 6 for beach fishing or throwing heavier flies, and the 691 (same rod blank as the 6) if you prefer a full wells grip with a fighting butt.
For reels, the Abel Super 5N is our choice. The Super 5N is a perfect fit on a 9 foot 5 or 6 weight due to its slightly lighter weight and smaller profile when compared to the Super 5. The Nautilus NV is a fantastic reel with a totally sealed disc drag. The Lamson Litespeed is a very smooth and light reel that will please Lamson fans all over. The galvan torque is a proven winner and its light weight and large line capacity make it a favorite of anglers.
The package includes a Scientific Anglers GPX Dry Tip weight forward floating fly line. The Sharkskin GPX is a great option for long drag-free drifts and easy pick up off the water. If you want a sink tip line and had to choose one, we would recommend the Wet Tip IV. It is medium-fast sinking and works well all over Alaska. If you want a slightly slower sink rate the Wet Tip III has a medium sink rate.
